Heading Home
Today we say goodbye to Alaska! We truly feel blessed to have been such a great opportunity to see this great state. This has to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet! God is good! As much as we have enjoyed our time here, we are glad to be headed home, not just to brick & mortar, but home to all of you. We have missed you!! We'll leave here at 7:00 this evening (10:00pm PC time) and arrive around 9:00a.m. in PC on Saturday. We covet your prayers as we travel back to Florida. Mt. McKinley
Mt. McKinley is the highest point on the North American continent. It is located several hours North of here. We didn't have time to drive all the way to it, but we drive north about 2.5 hours last night and got some great views of it.
Our first sight of it took our breath away. Roger said he had a lump in his throat, I almost started to cry. It is so majestic. Looming above the other mountain ranges, covered in snow, w/the summer artic sun glistening off of it. All I could think was how big our God must be to have held and created that towering moutain in His hands! Why do we ever have trouble trusting Him with the small details of our life? Alaska is truly the most beautiful place I've ever seen, beautiful bay to the south, incredible mountains, everything green and lush, and wildlife so abundant. We truly feel like the Lord blessed us by allowing us to see this part of the world/country. If the creation is this beautiful, this majestic, how Glorious our Lord & Saviour must be!! Isa. 40:12.

Friends: New & Old
Still having a great time in Alaska! This week we have spent time with some friends-- both old and new. Roger has a buddy here that he worked w/at Tyndall years ago and we had dinner w/him (& his family) on Tuesday night. They live in a subdivision just north of the base (off base); but this is the interesting thing I have to tell you: a couple of nights before we were there a black bear was at their back fence. Now, there back yard is about a 1/3 of the size of our backyard; we aren't talking in the back 40; but right there at their back door basically. wow. Wildlife is very abundant here. Everyone says that we've seen an exceptional amount for the time we've been here. I just feel like the Lord has just really blessed us by allowing us to see so many different creatures!
We aslo had a dinner w/a couple who is here for the same conference Roger is; he and Roger work in the same building, but not with each other; but turns out both he and his wife are really good Christian people, what a delight to have some wonderful fellowship! His wife and I visited some of the downtown sites yesterday and managed to navigate through the public bus system!Traveling is so fun, because you do things you would never do at home (public transportation!)
Also, we met two delightful couples on our day cruise into Resurrection Bay/Gulf of ALaska. THey are from Chicago and Michigan (they have been close friends for a long time). They said if we ever need a place to stay in Chicago/Michigan we have an open invitation. You will see their pictures when i post all of the updated pictures today!

Fish Update & Other Thoughts
Roger had a great time on his fishing trip yesterday. He caught about 8 Halibut, but could only keep 2. This fish is yummy tasting. It was beautiful and sunny all day yesterday; from the locals reaction, all the sunshine and warm temps (high 50's) was something of a special treat. It was a welcome relief for these Floridans as well! Today though was rainy and cold (low 50's), but still the scenery was beautiful!! Its 6pm here and the rain has finally subsided and the sun is shining! Its a whopping 55 degrees! We spent the whole weekend in Seward AK, and drove back to Anchorage today.
We have been a little disappointed in the resturants here. Last night we went to the Crab Pot. We're in Alaska, in a little tiny fishing town, so you kinda think you know what your expecting at a place called the Crab Pot. Well, it was oriental and though it served seafood (not chinese food), the food still had Asain flair. And as much as we like Chinese food, we didn't really like this food. So, while usually we try to eat a local places when we're traveling, today we sought out the comfort of a familiar resturant.
We also went to the Alaskan Conservation Center today. They rehibilatate animals who have been injured, etc. We were up close and personal with bear, elk, and bison. We'll post more pictures tomorrow. If you haven't been to the bottom of the blog (scroll all the way down), there are some pictures from Exit Glacier there.

Charter Fishing & More
Roger is headed out this morning on a Halibut charter. He is hoping to reel in a large one (or two!). Yesterday we saw them unload one weighing 88lbs. wow. He was quite excited!
I'm currently sitting in our hotel (we're in Seward, not Anchorage right now), looking out of this huge bay window over the gulf of Resurrection Bay. (I like that name!!). Behind the bay, are more of huge mountain ranges, still covered with snow! Wow! In some places along the road you can actually walk to the edge of the mountain and touch the snow! I'm going to post some more pictures and then I'm going to head to explore the little town of Seward! Its a quaint little coastal fishing town. Moose Kisses from Alaska!

Alaska, Alaska, Alaska!
Another wonderful day in Alaska. It was overcast all day, and quite cold. However,
nothing could detour our enthusiasim for getting out and seeing America's last
frontier. Today, we took a 6hr cruise into the Gulf of Alaska; we saw whales,
sea lions, puffins, eagles, bears, and more! We also hiked a short trail to a place
called Exit Glacier in Kenai Fords Nat'l Park. Words seem inadequate to
describe what we've seen so far! So... without delay, we'll let you see for
yourself!

Yummy Eating!!
Seafood... Alaska has a lot of it! We had Halibut last night and it was terrific! Roger had it again tonight. It reminds me of grouper, but isn't as dense. It also has a sweet twinge to it, kind of like crab or lobster. We've also tried Reindeer Sausage. I was just amazed to know there really is such a creature. It was very good also!! We walked around downtown this afternoon; we went to a place where the salmon usually run, but we didn't see any. Its not very warm out either, with pants and a light jean jacket on, I found myself cold. We also went to the Ulu Factory today. Its a very unique knife that is native to Alaska; it was a long, curved blade (anywhere from 4 inches and up). We're going to be bringing one home!
Other Interesting Tidbits of Info:
Price Check: a gallon of milk (on base) is $4.99; gas is $4.10 to $4.29 a galloon. Just thought you folks might like to know the prices here.
Elmendorf Airforce Base: this is a very large base, very spread out; its a joint base w/Ft Richardson Army Base. Just to give you an idea, there 4 elementary schools on this one (joint) base. wow. It is also a very old base. The hangers look like they are at least 50 years old. Alaska became a state in 1949; I'm unsure if this base existed before that. I'm going to research it while I'm here. We are actually staying in TLF -- which is housing for people who are moving here or leaving here for another base. (Regular base hotel lodging was full). So its like an apartment. The outside building looks as if you could pluck it right out of some WWII photo book; but the inside is quite modernized (smooth top stove, etc). Its really quite notsalgic from the outside. One other note: It has central heat, but no AIR. Of course, after today, I kind of understand why the don't kneed air.
Sweet Tea: They have sweet iced tea here! Wow! Its not unusal here. I was pretty impressed.
Well, thats about all of my observations thus far. I hope to post some pictures this weekend. Thats just one technical thing I didn't think of--- how to upload the pictures to this computer when it doesn't have a card reader (or something like that).

HOW AMAZING!!
We arrived safely last night around 6:15 local time. The sun was shinning and it was a cool 60 degrees. Our flight was quite uneventful-- which is always good-- unless you are a people watcher, it was quite interesting on that front.
About 2 hours out from Anchorage, we started seeing snow-capped mountain ranges- in every direction as far as the eye could see. It was beautiful, but the most breathing taking moment came for us, when after some cloud coverage had blocked the view of the mountains, all of sudden, snow-capped mountains burst through high above the clouds. If the Lord tarries until I'm a 100, I pray I will never forget how breathtaking it was. These beautiful, majestic snow capped mountains which seemed to appear out of nowwhere; It was so majestic and awing. And to think God created it all. It reminded me of when Moses went up the mountain to meet God. It was so majestic; I hope to post some pictures over the weekend.

Bags Are Packed!
Our bags are packed! We will fly out tomorrow morning and arrive in
Anchorage around 5:30 their time (8:30 our time). We are very
excited! Our flight from Atlanta to Anchorage is non stop 8 hours.
We've brought reading material, listening material, games, and of
course, food--The South Family traditional "Larry Mix" (chex mix w/
lots of yummy things like pecans, cheerios, m&m's...etc.). We
covet your prayers for a safe journey to America's last frontier!!
